Ionospheric Variability during the 2020–2021 SSW: COSMIC-2 Observations and WACCM-X Simulations

چکیده

Variability in the ionosphere during 2020–2021 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is investigated using a combination of Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate-2 (COSMIC-2) observations Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with thermosphere–ionosphere eXtension (WACCM-X) simulations. The unprecedented spatial–temporal sampling low latitude afforded by COSMIC-2 enables investigating short-term (<5 days) variability SSW event. reveal reduction diurnal zonal mean total electron content (ITEC) reduced amplitude variation SSW. Enhanced ITEC amplitudes semidiurnal solar lunar migrating tides westward propagating tide wavenumber 3 are also observed. WACCM-X simulations demonstrate that these variations driven stratosphere–mesosphere results show impact on state, diurnal, ionosphere, as well capabilities mission to observe meteorological lower atmosphere.

Ionospheric climatology and variability from long-term and multiple incoherent scatter radar observations: variability

Long-term incoherent scatter radar (ISR) observations are used to study ionospheric variability for two midlatitude sites, Millstone Hill and St. Santin. This work is based on our prior efforts which resulted in an empirical model system, ISR Ionospheric Model (ISRIM), of climatology (and now variability) of the ionosphere. We assume that the variability can be expressed in three terms, the bac...

Meteor science from ionospheric observations

Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Abstract We report the observation and analysis of ionization flashes associated with the decay of meteoroids (so-called head echos) detected by the Arecibo 430 MHz radar during regular ionospheric observations in the spring and autumn equinoxes. These two periods...

Simultaneous ionospheric variability on Earth and Mars

[1] Ionospheric physics deals with the basic structure and variability of plasma within the upper atmospheres of the Earth and planets. Comparative studies foster both exploration and synthesis within diverse settings. In this paper we examine observations of the ionospheric profiles on Mars obtained on 9–27 March 1999 by the radio science experiment onboard the Mars Global Surveyor satellite, ...

Modelling variability in black hole binaries: linking simulations to observations

Black hole accretion flows show rapid X-ray variability. The power spectral density (PSD) of this is typically fit by a phenomenological model of multiple Lorentzians for both the broad-band noise and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). Our previous paper developed the first physical model for the PSD and fit this to observational data. This was based on the same truncated disc/hot inner flow g...
